The New BIOS Update Has Arrived To Fix AMD Ryzen’s USB Connectivity Issues
AMD’s motherboard partners have finally begun rolling out the new BIOS update to fix AMD Ryzen’s USB connectivity issues. However, the revisions are still in the beta version with the final firmware revisions due in April.
This firmware update addresses the widespread USB stability and connectivity issues that occurred in the numerous Ryzen based Zen 2 and Zen 3 CPUs and 400 or 500 series motherboards. The existing problem is with 500 series motherboard chipsets. The problem has occurred with a few chipsets functions like random dropouts for USB connected devices that affect several different devices including USB 2.0 audio crackling (e.g. DAC/AMP combos), and USB/PCIe Gen 4 exclusion, unresponsive external capture devices, momentary keyboard connection drops, slow mouse responses, USB-connected CPU coolers and more.
To fix these issues, the company has announced the new BIOS patch which addresses the USB 2.0 controllers on 400- and 500-series motherboards. However, we are not sure yet if the other USB devices like USB 3.0 headers connected to the CPU directly or other USB 3.0/3.1 controllers were affected. And also we don’t have any clue yet whether the patch has any impact on performance or not.
However, it’s hard to detect whether or not the fix is present on your motherboard because AMD hasn’t updated the AGESA code with a new version; this fix still runs on the latest ComboV2 1.2.0.1 AGESA code. While checking to see if the motherboard has the new patch, the board makers should address the fixes in the description of the latest BIOS on the board partners’ web page.
But it’s no big deal, as most of the boards still do not have a new BIOS ready with the new AGESA code, only a few 500-series motherboards are equipped with this new patch update at the moment. Perhaps, within a few weeks, all the mainstream 400 and 500 series boards will receive the update.
